“Doctor Fehmi and the Open Focus Life.”

Dr. Les Fehmi is a pioneer in neurofeedback and a renowned psychologist with over four decades of experience. He is the director of the Princeton Biofeedback Centre in New Jersey.

Some possible Debate Insights

Mindfulness and the Nature of Experience: How does Dr. Fehmi’s approach to mindfulness compare with traditional mindfulness practices? What are the implications of his Open Focus method on the subjective nature of awareness and how it informs our reality. Can shifting attention change the essence of our experiences, and if so, how?

Attention Styles and Stress Management: What exactly is the concept of attention flexibility. How can understanding our attention styles help us navigate stress and anxiety in modern life? Are there philosophical implications regarding the nature of focus and distraction in an increasingly digitized world?

Consciousness and Perception: How does Dr. Fehmi’s techniques relate to broader philosophical discussions about consciousness. What does it mean to shift one’s consciousness deliberately? In what ways do the Open Focus practices challenge or affirm existing philosophical theories about the mind?

Practical Application vs. Theoretical Framework: Can self-improvement techniques, such as those proposed in the Open Focus approach, be critiqued from an existential perspective. Do they provide a mere Band-Aid solution, or can they lead to genuine transformative self-discovery and personal growth?

Ethics of Neurofeedback and Attention Control: What are the ethical considerations surrounding neurofeedback and techniques that manipulate attention. Should there be boundaries on how we engineer our consciousness? What implications does this have for autonomy and authenticity in experience?

“Meaning”

Defining knowledge is one of the oldest challenges in philosophy. For centuries, the standard definition was the Tripartite Theory, which argues that for you to “know” something, three conditions must be met:

  1. Truth: The thing must actually be true (you can’t “know” a lie).
  2. Belief: You must actually believe it’s true.
  3. Justification: You must have a good reason or evidence for that belief.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) philosopher,writer,critic
Lifelong partners and intellectual collaborators.
Existentialism
. Core idea. “Existence precedes essence.”
. Humans are free to choose, create their own meaning in life.
. No inherent purpose or destiny – we must take responsibility.
Key concepts
.
Freedom we are “condemned to be free.”
. Choice our choices define us.
. Responsibility, we must own our actions.
. Authenticity: living genuinely without pretences.
Impact
. influenced post-war thought, literature and politics.
. Shaped feminist, existentialist and humanist movements.
Example:  Beauvoir’s “The second sex”(1949) -a foundational; feminist text arguing women are not inherently inferior.
Final Thought: Existentialism is about embracing our freedom, taking responsibility and creating our own meaning. Beauvoir and Sartre’s ideas still resound today.
The opposite of existentialism is essentialism. Essentialism suggests that our essence (or purpose) is predetermined, often by external factors like society, religion or biology.
Other philosophies that contrast with existentialism include:
Nihilism, idealism. Determination – each offering different perspectives on meaning, purpose and human existence.
